PLAZA DE CERVANTES (SQUARE)
Nerve centre of the city
This square was, and still is, the heartbeat of the city. It was formerly known as the Plaza del Mercado (Market square), being where the weekly markets were held. It is also the venue for other festivities such as bull fights and the most important fiestas.
Dominating the square is a statue in honour of Cervantes, with a series of reliefs alluding to the work of “El Quijote”. A bandstand dating back to 1898 is also located in the square.
