This is the clearest example of a fortress cathedral in Europe, given the fact that it forms part of the city walls, and is the strongest bastion in the walls. The cathedral is dedicated to St Salvador, and work commenced in 1091. Its history is inextricably linked to that of the city. Even its apse, which Alfonso VII climbed (a historic event) is the central motif of the Avila coat of arms. The cathedral has been the stage for several great events; it is here that the Holy Council of the Comuneros met before the rising against Charles I.
